Curriculum

Year 7 and 8

Years 7 and 8 follow our science course using investigative skills, collaborative work, peer and self-assessment to cover Biology, Chemistry and Physics topics. This gives them the opportunity to think scientifically, understand the applications and implications of science as well as communicating their findings in relation to their life experiences.

Year 9, 10 and 11

Year 9 study Biology, Chemistry and Physics as separate subjects preparing for the examination they will take at the end of year 11.

Set 2-6 will be working towards AQA Combined Science Trilogy award which is the equivalent of 2 GCSEs. This includes:

Stimulating and engaging topics within biology, chemistry and physics that you will encounter in your everyday life, such as infection and how your body fights it, the chemistry of the atmosphere and the way electricity is made.

You will be able to use your understanding of the science of the world around you to understand some of the scientific applications within the biological, chemical and physical topics studied.

You will also develop an understanding of ‘How Science Works’, including how scientific theories are developed and challenged.  Such an understanding will help you to evaluate and understand scientific ideas around you through mediums such as advertising or instructional manuals.

Formative assessment through class work, homework and unit tests will occur throughout the course.  Summative assessment occurs through external examinations in June 2018.  Over the course you will be carrying out 16 required practicals which will be examined as part of the final exam.

Set 1 will be working towards GCSE qualifications in separate sciences, biology, chemistry and physics, again following the AQA scheme.

You will learn all aspects of the combined science trilogy course. You will also learn detailed aspects of biology, chemistry and physics that will help you if you carry on with further study of the sciences at A-Level.

Formative assessment through class work, homework and unit tests will occur throughout the course.  Summative assessment occurs through external examinations in Summer 2018. Over the course you will be carrying out 8 required practicals for each of biology, chemistry and physics which will be examined as part of the final exam.

AQA Key Stage 5

At Key Stage 5, we offer:

AQA A level Biology

AQA A level Chemistry

AQA A level Physics

BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Science

Teaching and learning

Our teaching takes into account all learning styles:

·         practical work / field studies / educational visits

·         teacher exposition and demonstration

·         individual tasks / group-work / problem solving

·         homework / past exam questions/ research

·         simulations/modelling/role play

Homework

For each year group a weekly homework is set.

This can be written tasks, research activities, or using Doddle and is expected to completed by the due date, to the best of the students ability.

Assessment

Assessment for learning is carried out during each lesson.

Summative assessment takes place at the end of every topic. We use examination style questions preparing students for the challenge  of public examinations .
