KEVI Handsworth Wood Girls’ Academy is committed to providing every student the opportunity to progress and achieve to the best of their ability. Independent learning plays a vital part in children’s education and is set by teachers according to clear Academy and Departmental policies. The school uses FireFly Learning to help students organise their home study tasks. Every student and parent/carer has access to the site via a personalised login, through which they can view details of home study set by teachers, including deadlines and support materials.

Students that raise concerns in terms of missing/ incomplete home study will be placed in compulsory homes study intervention sessions. Home study interventions are every Tuesday and Thursday 3.30 to 4.30 free of charge. The intervention session will provide your daughter with one to one support from a subject teacher with access to a wide range of subject specific resources. The intervention will be held in room W005 which hosts excellent ICT facilities to maximise the use of FireFly if needed. Please familiarise yourself with the points below which outline the procedure for the intervention sessions.

  • Students will be made aware of the intervention session and of how vital their attendance is.
  • Parents will receive an intervention letter through the post. Parents will be required to return a signed a permission slip.
  • Students will arrive 5 minutes before the session and sign in.
  • Students will be required to have the correct exercise books and equipment for their session.

Intervention sessions also provide the opportunity for subject teachers to recommend GCSE students to attend revision sessions which are targeted at individuals who need extra help with specific topics or skills. Parents will be informed if students miss Intervention Sessions as this they play a vital part of helping every student maximise their potential.

Home Study is set for all year groups 7-11 and after each session in the 6th Form.  You are expected to write your home study within your planners and check your Firefly login at home or within the school day.  Home study can be a variety of activities from research, reading, extended writing, examination questions, Doddle activities and VLE tasks.  Home study time tables are below and a guide on how to use Doddle.  Your login should be on a sticker in your planner.
