Welcome to King Edward VI Handsworth Wood Girls’ Academy

At King Edward VI Handsworth Wood Girl’s Academy our core aim is excellence for all which is underpinned by our vision, mission and values. We are a High Performance Learning World Class school which means that we believe in the HPL philosophy and framework. This means that we believe that all the students can be high performers, and we teach with these expectations in mind. We use HPL to develop our core values of scholarship, character and community which focuses on the 5 Advanced Cognitive Performance skills and the 3 Values, Attitudes and Attributes of the HPL framework.

We are delighted to have been awarded High Performance Learning (HPL) International Research School status.  This status recognises our research informed culture where we follow evidence when Initiating school based changes.  It celebrates that we provide regular opportunities for staff to meet together and talk about research.  It supports our focus on ensuring our staff have the expertise to deliver the very best education as specialists in their area.  We are excited to work within the HPL international community on our next research projects.

‘World Class Schools has enabled me to become the best version of myself.  I was lucky enough to work in an amazing and supporting team where I was able to communicate and discuss the tasks we had to complete. The accreditation process showed me what teamwork truly means. Working remotely during these unprecedented circumstances which was a challenge, but we succeeded. As a result, I was able to develop my confidence, resilience and communication skills throughout this process.

Kind Edward VI Handsworth Wood Girls Academy has been awarded the prestigious World Class Schools Quality Mark (WCSQM).  We are just one of 12 secondary schools nationally to achieve the award in 2021, and are currently the only school in Birmingham that have achieved World Class status.

We’re proud to announce that our school is now part of the Embedding Formative Assessment (EFA) programme, a nationally recognised initiative focused on enhancing teaching and learning through evidence-informed practice. This marks a significant step in our ongoing commitment to improving student outcomes by placing formative assessment at the heart of classroom practice. As part of the programme, we’ll be working closely with staff to embed strategies that support effective feedback, student engagement, and continuous learning. We’re excited to share this journey with our community and invite you to explore the resources and updates we’ll be posting as we move forward.
