Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) Curriculum

PSHE at KEVI Handsworth Wood Girls’ Academy is a planned, developmental programme of learning where students acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives independently and safely at present and in the future.   The PSHE curriculum is designed in conjunction with government guidance to provide a bespoke, age-appropriate learning experience that meet the needs of our pupils.

The core purpose of PSHE can be summarised in three statements:

  • To equip students with the skills, knowledge and attributes needed to successfully access a range of opportunities in an ever-changing world.
  • To give students an understanding of how to lead responsible, confident, safe, healthy, and independent lives.
  • To establish and develop their own values, attitudes, and virtues to enrich themselves and our community.

All students from year 7 to 13 have one 50 min lesson timetabled every week.  The lessons are planned by our team of specialist PSHE staff who secure the pupils’ skills and knowledge through the following topic areas:

  • Dreams & Goals (Careers)
  • Relationships
  • Sex & Relationships Education
  • Health Me (Health & Well-being including Mental Health)
  • Being Me in My World/ Living in the Wider World.

Character development, E-Safety and safeguarding are underpinning themes that run throughout these topic areas and are covered across all key stages.

We run three Personal Development days across the academic year where students get the opportunity to build upon knowledge of the academy’s character education scheme whilst learning about current topics, relevant safeguarding and careers information.
