World Book Day 2019

On the 7th March KEVI Handsworth Wood Girls Academy celebrated world book day.  There were so many wonderful activities taking place across the Academy. The day started in the library where students were invited to have a readers breakfast.  At break and lunchtime the screen was put up in the library showing Grandpa’s Great Escape.  This is a film based on the David Walliams book.

Year 7, 8 and 9 students participated in a Readathon which was launched in the English department where students were sponsored for their reading.   Readathon is run by thousands of schools across the UK on World Book Day. It’s a brilliant way to get everyone to read what they love – from comic annuals to classics, and audiobooks to eBooks – it’s all about picking up whatever you enjoy reading the most!

Students had the opportunity to participate in the Behind the Book Competition, students enjoyed guessing which staff member was behind it.  There were also a themed canteen menu at lunchtime and themed lessons that took place in DT, English and Drama.  A Spelling Bee was also launched in English.

At the start of P3 the whole school participated in D.E.A.R (drop everything and read) Students read their chosen book for 5 minutes and there were further reading opportunities throughout the day.

There was also a World Book Day Cake Competition which was judged at lunchtime.  Students baked cakes at home and decorated them with a world book day theme.  The winner had made cupcakes with lovely handmade icing that was designed to look like book covers.
