Poetry Live

On Wednesday 29th January 2014, a group of Year 11 students attended the GCSE Poetry Live! Event at Birmingham Symphony Hall.

Poetry is so much better when read aloud or performed and the annual Poetry Live event is a chance to see and hear performances from a brilliant collection of poets.

Throughout the day we listened to recitals from renowned writers; Gillian Clarke, Simon Armitage, Imtiaz Dharker, Daljit Nagra, John Agard and even Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy.

Each poet shared their own poems and talked about poetry in ways that not only made meanings clear but heightened our experiences of poetry by allowing us, as the audience, to understand the thought processes behind the crafting of language.

The students also took on board some valuable advice and exam tips from chief examiner, Peter Buckroyd.

I am sure that Poetry Live! has been a positive learning experience for all who attended and I picked up some ideas for the classroom too!

“I thoroughly enjoyed the GCSE Poetry Live! event at The Symphony Hall because it was something different. A good experience to see the poets talk  about their career in poetry with detailed explanations of the poems used in the syllabus. I appreciated this trip because it gave the audience a chance to ask the poets questions and listen to their responses first hand.”

Zalika Noah, Year 11 student.
