HWGA Peace Garden opening

On the afternoon of Thursday 6 April 2017 a ceremony was held at HWGA to dedicate the newly created Peace Garden to the memory of former teacher and Head of Humanities Sarah Coomer who sadly passed away in December 2015.

The ceremony was attended by staff and students from the academy along with Sarah’s husband, brother, parents and former staff members who worked alongside Mrs Coomer.

Head Teacher Nicola Walters led the ceremony, which included students Emily Ewins and Saba Ali in year 10 performing the song “Hallelujah” and Year 8 students from Mrs Coomer’s form reading out some of their personal memories of her.

A cheque for £600 was presented to Gill Beasley from Macmillan Cancer Support which had been raised through a couple of coffee mornings in the academy. Finally Mr Jon Coomer, Mrs Coomer’s husband, cut the ribbon to officially open the Peace Garden. Everyone was then invited to afternoon tea in the main hall where tea and cake were served.
