HWGA Students visit local Mosque

On Sunday 5th February 2017, myself and a few of my friends met Mr. Gilday at our local Mosque in Handsworth Wood – Masjid e Aisha. We wanted to build links with our school and local community and introduce Mr. Gilday to our faith, culture and traditions.

Once we stepped foot in the mosque we were warmly greeted by members of the community and were given refreshments. Everyone there was extremely friendly and we quickly settled in. First we sat down and listened to one of the mosque teachers give us an inspirational talk on Islam and how familiar it is to many other beliefs. We ate nice food, heard some stories, took part in the Wudhu and listened to the most beautiful call to prayer.

We got to meet the Lord Mayor of Birmingham and local MPs. We talked about everything from religion to school and how we are all similar as humans.

Mr. Gilday, who is not a Muslim, was fascinated and we were very grateful he was giving up his Sunday to learn more about our lives. He was very respectful and interested. This was brilliant as this is the attitude the local mosque would love to promote.

The experience was absolutely fantastic and is something I would love to do more of. Perhaps next time we will go to a Church or a Gurdwara and learn about other religions. At the end of the day, the one thing we all have in common is that we are all humans and that is what makes the diverse community at HWGA an exciting place to be!
